We’re pleased to announce that ConceptXYZ has acquired PhiloShape, bringing its distinctive collection of 3D-printed lighting designs into the ConceptXYZ range.
It’s an exciting step for us and one that fits perfectly with what we want ConceptXYZ to become: a home for interesting, practical and original products created through a combination of design, engineering and modern manufacturing.
Introducing PhiloShape
PhiloShape built a collection of distinctive lighting centred around simple forms, playful shapes and the possibilities offered by additive manufacturing.
Rather than conventional mass-produced lamps, the collection uses 3D printing to create unusual sculptural forms that are as much a part of the room when switched off as they are when illuminated.
Following the acquisition, the PhiloShape designs and intellectual property have transferred to ConceptXYZ, and the collection will now be manufactured and sold by us from our base in Devon.
A New Home for the Collection
We didn't acquire PhiloShape simply to continue running it as a separate business.
Instead, its designs are becoming part of ConceptXYZ.
Existing designs including Yoli, Philo, Lumos Maxima and Skirt will sit within our new Lighting Collection, with production gradually moving across to our own manufacturing setup.
The designs themselves aren't being forgotten or replaced. They're the reason we wanted the collection in the first place.
What will change is where they're made and the business behind them.
From now on, PhiloShape products will be manufactured by ConceptXYZ in Devon, alongside our own growing range of products.
Why Lighting?
At first glance, lighting might seem quite different from some of the other products we're developing at ConceptXYZ.
But the thinking behind it is actually very similar.
We started ConceptXYZ around a simple idea:
If something could work better, design a better solution.
That doesn't mean every product has to solve a mechanical problem. Good design can be functional, practical, unusual, beautiful – or a combination of all four.
The PhiloShape collection also demonstrates what additive manufacturing can do beyond conventional prototypes and engineering components. It allows forms to be manufactured that would be difficult or uneconomical to produce using many traditional manufacturing methods.
That's something we want to explore much further.
What Happens Next?
The first job is bringing the existing collection across to ConceptXYZ and getting production established here in Devon.
After that, we'll begin putting our own stamp on the range.
That means experimenting with materials and colours, refining manufacturing methods and, most importantly, developing new ConceptXYZ lighting designs to sit alongside the collection we've acquired.
We have no intention of stopping at the existing range.
The acquisition gives us another foundation to build from – alongside our own product development, CAD design and manufacturing work – and considerably expands what ConceptXYZ can offer at a very early stage in our journey.
For a business that began with a printer, some engineering experience and rather too many ideas, seeing our first acquired product collection arrive is a pretty exciting milestone.
And we're only getting started.
